NAME: Rider (Francis Drake)
CANON: Fate/Extra
CANON POINT: Losing the match (Saber route, female MC)
CHARACTER AGE: old. About 55 at death, but an everlasting spirit from the 16th century, so, y'know.
HISTORY: wiki
PERSONALITY: Initially, Rider seems to be purely indifferent and selfish. She continually insists on being paid more for her service, despite knowing she's within a virtual world and so it really can't do her much good. Still, she wants it even so. She mocks her Master, despite also knowing he's only a child, insults him and seems cold toward him. After all, in her own words, she's just a hired gun. In fact she seems to quite like playing up the fact that she's known for cruelty and selfishness, often declaring that she's a villain, the kind of person Shinji shouldn't have trusted to be a good and loyal Servant, and a cruel opponent in battle. Her flippant and crass way of speaking certainly plays up that image too. Rider seems to not take anything seriously except the need for more treasure, essentially.
Absolutely a hedonist and a libertine, she craves experiences of all sorts, and enjoys pursuing them as well. As she says, "everything's better if you fight for it - food, women, victory" and, "if you're going to be a villain, might as well be as flamboyant as you please". Those two lines summarise her quite nicely, really. She's loud, obscene and rowdy, loves to drink and fight, and spends her money more than a little too freely. She could be rich one day and barely have two pennies to rub together the next. But that's all part of the fun, why bother thinking ahead to the future when you can have fun in the present. Even sudden poverty or injury because of it is just a reminder of what a good time it was, and then it's just time to go build herself back up. Besides, she's aware that everything is fleeting, health, money and possessions, relationships, life itself, and there's no way to change that, so it's better to welcome it with open arms. If anything's going to come to an end or be lost, might as well have it go out with a bang. She compares her way of living, and herself, to a raging storm, that scatters things about and leaves destruction in its wake, and it's awfully appropriate. It's big, loud, destructive and without regard or purpose, but can start and stop just as suddenly. Additionally, she's a fan of various arts, particularly music, as she dislikes 'tone-deaf men' - and hey, pirates are known for singing plenty, right? In reality Drake was known for bringing an entire orchestra aboard his main ship with him during his expedition to sail around the world. And it makes sense, what's more fleeting than something like music or theatre? It can be beautiful and great in the moment, but leaves no evidence behind once it's over, that has to be appealing to her sensibilities.
But for all that she is selfish and crude, she truly cares about the people around her. Making fun of Shinji is part of her way of toughening him up...and just the sort of person she is. She takes it upon herself to make him a man, as it were. If he's going to play at being an adult, and so desperately want to be strong and cool, then it's her duty to help him actually become it, she wants good things for him, he's like a brother or a nephew, an unofficially adopted son of sorts. Even Hakuno and Saber, despite being her enemies, amuse her and are offered advice and best wishes. No doubt it was the same with her crew, Rider's a charismatic and fun person, and it's easy to see how a group of pirates would have followed her implicitly. She believes in sharing her wealth, whether that's in a literal monetary sense, or something more abstract, her knowledge, skills, general outlook, respect where it's earned.
It's heavily implied that before she was Francis Drake, Rider was Queen Elizabeth I, later switching places with Drake. We can't know just what any underlying personality or thoughts are, however, as Drake is the role she plays. Most of it is certainly in earnest, but where necessary to keep up the idea that she is and always has been Francis Drake, sometimes a few lies might be needed. But it's an appropriate person for something like Elizabeth to trade roles with - still very nationalistic and devoted to England, but from a very different angle. However, while she would have had to sit on the throne and keep up appearances then, Drake is just the opposite in that, and that must be a very liberating thing. Really it's impossible for that life not to colour some of her thoughts, even if she won't show it through actions, or ever speak of it.
ABILITIES:
Heroic Spirit
Everything that entails, running on mana, some regenerative properties on top of fortitude. With Shinji as a Master, her stats are: Strength D, Mana E, Endurance C, Luck EX, Agility B. She gets stronger the more she's paid, or the more treasure there is. She uses a pair of flintlock pistols charged by mana.
Magic Resistance
Rank D, and exactly what it sounds like.
Pioneer of the Stars
Rank EX. Essentially means nothing is impossible for her and in fact can be quite possible - her Luck is already EX but apparently this basically adds on to that even more. somehow. SUPER EX RANK LUCK don't doubt Francis Drake, no one knows how she manages the shit she does, but she does, until the dysentery.
Voyager of the Storm
Rank A+. Rather than the regular Riding ability which potentially allows riding of any vehical or mount, Rider instead is able to use anything classified as a ship. It comes with use of two other abilities as well:
Military Tactics - exactly that. Strengthens her Noble Phantasm as it's 'anti-army', and gives her greater endurance against the same.
Charisma - also exactly that, the ability to lead others, able to spur them on to battle or endear oneself toward them, and increases their strength.
Golden Wild Hunt
Rank A+, her Noble Phantasm, anti-army type. She can summon her fleet of ships, with the Golden Hinde, formerly known as the Pelican, at the front. When using it in battle, it acts as the Wild Hunt, a mythical storm of dead figures of legend charging into war, with the ships firing cannons. She can also manifest individually parts of a ship, or a single one for other purposes.
Limit them as you see fit...???
SINS & VIRTUES:
Lust Definitely lust in its most basic sense, but also more than that. Rider has plenty of different desires, which also play into her other sins, but as a Libertine lust is particularly strong. She lusts after experiences, money, things, sex, music, anything she feels like at any given moment.
Chastity Elizabeth I was called The Virgin Queen, what more is there to say? She went quite a while being chaste in many respects, although that isn't who she is anymore. Although even as Drake, you could say she has a chastity towards England, that she's nationalistic.
Gluttony Very similar to Lust, this is also part of her creed. If you could say Lust is the desire for experience, then Gluttony would be desire to consume, or to use something up. Her motto of 'scatter it like a storm' in regard to money in particular is telling. She sees the impermanence in everything and takes full advantage because of it. Why bother letting anything sit around unused? She's also...basically always drinking.
Temperance Also very similar to Chastity, she knows the value of moderation and of presenting oneself well. She just doesn't bother with it now.
Greed Once again what self-respecting Libertine wouldn't have Greed. Or a pirate, for that matter. Even though Greed is more on the end of accumulation than consuming, it goes hand in hand with her Gluttony. She spends her money freely even on things that are entirely worthless and will sit around doing absolutely no good. Not to mention pilaging and plundering, or that she calls herself a hired gun, and even her Master has to pay her for her help in the Grail War. Even if it's virtual money that will do her no good at all.
Charity And yet at the same time, she's very generous. She wants plenty for herself, but her Greed isn't selfish, she's happy to spread the wealth around with her crew, or maybe even others if she feels like it.
Sloth A lot can be said for the virtues of sitting around drinking all day. Or for holding out on doing any work without ample reward.
Diligence When she wants to, she won't ever give up. Sailing around the world, defeating the Spanish Armada, pursuing somebody hot, making cash money, just a day in the life of Francis Drake.
Wrath Fuck the Spanish, mostly. Drake purposefully went after Spanish ships specifically and killed all but a couple, to send back to spread the word that El Draque is around. With other countries, if the ship was attacked, they were all allowed to live (provided they didn't 'try anything stupid') and simply plundered the cargo. For the real Drake, this is supposedly because several of his family members were killed by Spanish pirates. For Elizabeth, well there's the whole struggle for the throne, and regardless of who she 'is', quite a bit of frustration and cruelty is very apparent in Rider.
Patience As much as she might be without mercy for her enemies, she's good to her allies, and as evidenced by her death, able to roll with pretty much anything. Even in losing, dying and watching her Master die, she calmly accepts it and encourages him to do the same.
Envy How can you be a pirate without a little envy. Other people have things? She wants them, she's going to get them. That's the whole point. In her origins, there's almost certainly some envy too for another way of life. That she was under obligation and restricted, and switched places with someone just the opposite is no small thing. She even expresses some enviousness for Hakuno and their Servant's good relationship.
Kindness But she doesn't accumulate wealth just to sit on it, or spend it all on herself. Those around her, friends and even strangers have the chance to share in it as well. She has a positive outlook almost exclusively and tries to make others do the same. With Shinji, she basically takes him under her wing like a little brother and tries to push him in the right direction.
Pride She's awesome and she knows it. Whether it's her achievements, her body and looks, intelligence, drinking skills, anything, she'll gladly let everyone know just how great she is and show off. She won't give anything but her all, and hates fighting people weaker than herself, there's no point to it for far too many reasons, being an insult to her among them.
Humility Just because she's pretty great doesn't mean others can't be too, though. She accepts that Hakuno and their Servant were ultimately stronger than she was, and even wishes for them to go further still.
